Acid phosphatase (ACP) is present in high concentration in the prostate gland. It is released into the blood only when a cancer spreads beyond the gland capsule. It may also be high after a rectal examination of the prostate gland. The normal amount present in blood is 2.3 to 5.7 U/L while higher levels indicate the presence of prostate gland cancer or acute myelocytic leukaemia.
