The amniotic sac is the thin walled fibrous membrane in the form of a sac that surrounds the foetus and contains amniotic fluid during pregnancy. It is attached to the edges of the placenta and otherwise is pushed against, but not attached to, the inside of the uterus. The sac ruptures to release the fluid within it during labour.
