Amniotomy

AmniotomyAn amniotomy is the artificial rupturing of the membranes (ARM), the amniotic sac around the foetus, in order to induce labour at a late stage of pregnancy. The procedure is usually performed through the vagina and cervix with a pair of toothed forceps that are used to grasp and tear the membrane. It is uncomfortable but not painful for the mother.
