In some societies today, and in medieval Europe, it was normal for a woman to give birth while seated. A specially designed chair called the birthing chair is used for the purpose. It has a U shaped seat open to the front, supportive arms, and a back that slopes backwards. The actual structure, degree of padding and comfort depends on the individual design and expectations of the mother and midwife. Lights, mirrors and collecting basins may be installed below the chair.
