Constipation in pregnancy is common. It is thought to be due to a loosening of the muscles of the digestive tract caused by the hormonal changes of pregnancy.

In late pregnancy the enlarging womb presses on the intestines and aggravates the condition. It is not dangerous, but if worrying, a faecal softener can be used.

No medications, including laxatives, should be used during pregnancy without discussing them with a doctor.
