If growth concern with a child they are initially measured for height, weight and head circumference. These measurements are compared with those of other children using statistical tables. The height of the parents will also be checked to see if there is a genetic influence.
If a significant abnormality is found, investigations will be undertaken to determine the cause. The causes are extremely varied and include chronic infections, gut infestations (e.g worms), heart disease, cystic fibrosis, food allergies and intolerance and a host of other rarer conditions. Child neglect and abuse is something that doctors have to be careful of in this situation also.
