Hegar sign is an old fashioned physical test for pregnancy. If a doctor examines the uterus through the vagina with one hand, while the other feels the uterus by pressure on the belly, an empty softened area can be felt between the firmer cervix and the globular uterus in a pregnant woman between the sixth and tenth weeks. The hormones of pregnancy cause softening of the uterus, but the foetus only occupies the upper part of the uterus in early stages.
