Low Calcium Diet
A low calcium diet is one that excludes all dairy products, small bony fish (e.g. sardines) and dark green vegetables (eg. spinach). It is used in patients with too much calcium in their blood (hypercalcaemia), high urinary calcium and repeated attacks of calcium based kidney stones. Some medications as prescribed by your doctor can also be taken along with the diet to help in achieving the results desired.
Dairy products are high in calcium and should be the first food group to minimise in the diet. Some brands of food such as cereal also have added calcium. Be sure to read food labelling for these additions.
Other foods high in calcium include:
- Salmon, sardines and oysters
- Green vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, okra and green beans
- Almonds and sesame seeds
Also ensure that any dietary supplements you are taking do not contain calcium.
Remember it is a low calcium diet and not a “no” calcium diet. Calcium is a highly important mineral required by the body. You should only establish a low calcium diet if your doctor recommends it.
