Oedema

Swelling caused by water leaking out thru walls of the blood capillaries [=small blood vessels] into the adjoining tissues. Water cannot be held fully inside the capillaries because there are not enough proteins in the blood to hold it back. If you press the swollen skin with your finger, pressure leaves a pit in the skin. This is a sign of oedema.
