Pantothenic acid is the chemical name of vitamin B5. It is a water-soluble vitamin and the recommended daily allowance of vitamin B5 is 4 to 7 mg.

A large number of preparations include pantothenic acid or its derivative panthenol, alone or in combination with other vitamins and minerals. It is used as a tablet or mixture to treat vitamin B deficiency, and as a cream for mild burns, nappy rash and sore nipples. It is safe in pregnancy, breastfeeding and children, but should not be taken in high doses or for prolonged periods of time. Remember, vitamins are merely chemicals that are essential for the functioning of the body, and if taken to excess, act as a drug.
